Humanity is precariously clinging at the precipice of a large looming environmental threat whose effects we have already witnessed in recent times. In the last few decades, the world’s weather has gone through a paradigm shift. The fangs of the ill effects of greenhouse emissions and climate change have affected humans, plants, and animals alike pushing few species to near extinction. Animal rearing and the meat industry is adding more fuel to the already smoldering fire.

The main culprit for the alarming climate change is human-made greenhouse gas emissions. The rampant use of fossil fuel in the meat industry is not only having a detrimental effect on the protective ozone layer but also endangering the lives of everyone, humans and animals alike. The amount of energy required to keep the slaughterhouses and the rearing units up and running is the primary contributor to these harmful emissions. A large quantity of water is used in the meat industry especially for poultry, pork, and beef to keep the place clean and for animal consumption. This is very alarming especially when many parts of the world are facing acute water shortages.

Another environmental challenge is the destruction of the natural habitat of wild animals for grazing livestock and thereby setting the clock ticking for mass deforestation. Most of the forests are either cut down or set on fire to keep up with the demands of the ever-increasing meat industry. A major health risk to animals on land and on the water is the harmful animal waste from these rearing units of the meat industry. These are shoddily managed that in turn results in groundwater contamination by nitrogen and phosphorus which contaminates the water and endangers marine life.

The most effective antidote to stop the frightening effects of environmental issues is a simple but strong emphatic step of embracing veganism. By being a vegan, one hits hard at the ill effects of industrialized animal farming. The strong chain of demand and supply is fragmented which sets a rippling effect all around. The natural habitats prosper and animals can lead their life free of the fear of being slaughtered and finding their way to a dinner plate.

Veganism supports and believes in the idea of peaceful co-existence of all species and maintain the natural ecological balance between human and the animal world. It strongly advocates compassion and discontinuation of any kind of animal cruelty for the human fancy like food, clothing, medicinal, or any other purpose. Adopting a vegan way of life is like wielding a double-edged sword. It not only keeps one fit and healthy but ensures that the environment is healed in the process, promising a breathable world for our future generations.
