This wonderful blue planet called Earth is home to millions of different species of animals, insects, birds, and of course, humans. Every living being has the right to peaceful co-existence and animals are no exception. The greatest quality that differentiates us from other organisms in our decision-making ability. However, we have not been taking the right decisions. To fulfill our gluttonous delight and due to certain misconceived notions, animals had long been exploited inhumanely. Be it the whale oil used in the pharmaceutical industry, bovine animals of the milk industry, and thousands of animals slaughtered daily in the food industry, these voiceless lovely creatures had been suffering from time immemorial.

The simplest step an individual can partake to contribute to ensuring a better world for the animals is to stop using products that endorse animal cruelty and unleash a domino effect by reducing the demand and thereby directly hitting the core of supply. Many people have the misconception that being vegan is being vegetarian. It is a way of living that attempts to bar all types of animal cruelty and exploitation in every form be it for food, clothing, or any other purposes. It is very heart wrenching to witness how animals are confined and the brutality unleashed on them just to satisfy the human want.

We had been following the age-old false notion that the basic nutrition for bodybuilding can be acquired only by eating the flesh of harmless animals whereas the same amount of nutrition can be acquired from plants and vegetables. Every day, thousands of animals and poultry are culled in the slaughterhouses which find their way to the dining plates for instant gratification. In the bovine industry, young calves are forcibly taken away from lactating mothers and confined solitarily to keep up to the high demands of the ever-growing milk industry. The mother is then forcibly inseminated and the vicious cycle continues. Widely considered as nature’s best food, the calcium in milk is considered an important supplement for growth and development. However, calcium is present also in nuts, greens, and beans. An excess of milk intake can result in prostate cancer, acne, lactose intolerance, ovarian cancer, and weak bones. In the poultry industry, a normal hen that lays 10–15 eggs annually is intensively bred to produce a whopping number of 200–250 eggs per year. The giant whales are hunted every year in multitudes in Japan, Norway, and Iceland to bolster the production of the multinational pharmaceutical and health supplement companies.

We must shun the practice of treating animals as products kept alive only for human profit. Going vegan is adopting an empathetic and firm stand against animal cruelty and making the Earth a better place for the animals.
